Answer

What spaying or neutering a pet costs in Tampa

The short answer

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay publishes its spay and neuter fees rather than quoting them. A cat spay is $105 and a neuter $95, both including pain medication and a rabies vaccination. Dog fees run by weight. Surgeries are by appointment with a $25 deposit, and drop off is early in the morning at the Tampa campus.

How much does it cost to spay or neuter a cat in Tampa?

$105 to spay and $95 to neuter, as published by the shelter on 2026-09-15. Both are packages rather than a surgery fee on its own.

A cat spay breaks down as surgery at $70, pain medication at $10, rabies vaccination at $20 and a biohazard fee at $5. A neuter is surgery at $60 with the same three additions.

How much does it cost to neuter a dog in Tampa?

Dog fees run by weight, and the line is 50 pounds.

DogSpayNeuter
Under 50 lbs$178$153
Over 50 lbs$203$178

Each package covers the surgery, pain medication at $10, a rabies vaccination at $20, an e-collar at $8 and a biohazard fee at $5. Add-ons are available and quoted at the appointment.

Fees are as published on 2026-09-15. The shelter notes that pricing varies with the age and needs of the animal, so the clinic is the place to confirm before booking.

How do I book a spay or neuter appointment?

By phone, on 813.870.3304. Surgeries are appointment only and a $25 non refundable deposit is required to hold the slot.

Drop off is between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM, which surprises people the first time. Arrive inside that window.

Why is it so much less than a private vet?

Because the clinic exists to reduce the number of animals arriving at the shelter, and it is run as part of a non profit rather than as a business. Fees go back into the care of the animals in the building.

That is also why the hospital is open to the public rather than only to shelter animals. It is an AAHA accredited practice, which is a standard most private clinics in the area do not hold.

What about feral or outdoor cats?

Different programme and a different price. TNVR covers spay or neuter, a rabies vaccination, an FVRCP vaccination and ear tipping for $35 a cat.

Cats have to arrive in humane traps rather than carriers, and traps can be rented from the animal hospital. The community cats page has the full process.

What else does the clinic charge for?

Vaccinations are the other published figure: a vaccine special runs Monday to Thursday at $55 a pet. Vaccine only appointments can be booked online, while anything else goes through the phone.

The animal hospital handles full service veterinary care beyond that, Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM, closed Sundays.

Is a low fee clinic the same as a vet visit?

No, and the difference matters when something is wrong with an animal. A low fee clinic is not a discount version of a veterinary practice.

A surgery slot is a surgery slot. If a pet is unwell, has a lump, is off its food or has a condition that needs investigating, that is a hospital appointment and it needs booking as one, by phone, with time set aside. Turning up to a spay drop off with a sick animal helps nobody.

The clinic is also not an emergency service. Outside hospital hours the shelter publishes after hours recommendations instead.

Do I need to do anything before surgery?

The shelter publishes pre and post operative instructions on its own clinic pages, and the instructions differ by animal. Read them when the appointment is booked rather than the night before.

Are rabbits included?

Yes. Rabbit fees are published alongside cats and dogs on the shelter’s clinic page, and the clinic is worth calling to talk through what a rabbit needs before booking.

What if I cannot afford even this?

Say so when you call. The shelter runs food assistance and other support intended to keep pets with the people who love them, and the keep your pet page sets out what exists.

Questions we get asked

Can I book a spay or neuter online?

No. Only vaccine appointments are bookable online. Spay and neuter surgeries, wellness visits and anything health related go through 813.870.3304.

Is the deposit refundable?

No. The deposit is non refundable and it holds the appointment, which is how a clinic running a full surgery list each morning keeps the slots filled. It comes off nothing: it is part of the package price rather than an extra.

Which campus does surgery?

Spay and neuter runs from the Tampa campus at 3607 N Armenia Ave. The main guide has both campuses and their hours.

Do the prices include a microchip?

The published packages cover surgery, pain medication, rabies vaccination and the small fees listed above. Anything else is an add on and the clinic quotes it at the appointment.
